This study expresses a deep sense of admiration for the people of Casanare, Boyacá, and Santander, who, united by patriotism, suffering, and glory, following the ill-fated bicentennial commemoration of this century, still trust that the Colombian nation will, in the near future, reward them for their outstanding service to the cause of emancipation.
This historical and legal essay aims to demonstrate that while the Liberator Simón Bolívar was the architect of the unique and heroic epic of American freedom, with his illustrious victories in the battles of Boyacá, Pichincha, Carabobo, Junín, and Ayacucho; Francisco de Paula Santander and Juan Nepomuceno Moreno—national heroes, military leaders, and heads of state—were the inspirers and architects of the Casanarean Llaneridad, whose essential attributes were freedom, the law, the pen, and the spear, which impart order, authority, mutual respect, and civil and democratic institutions.
These three national heroes made outstanding contributions to the cause of independence: Simón Bolívar was a genius and a guiding light through his ideas and his sword, and as a bold visionary, he was a liberator and the father of the nation; General Santander, a valiant military man, was a man of the law, and through his writing he became an authority on education and restored order; and Juan Nepomuceno Moreno, with his lance, became a victorious lancer, a constituent from Casanare, a champion of equality (the lance symbolizes equality), and a leader opposed to caudillismo.
In this way, this book by Antonio José Rivadeneira Vargas offers a profound look at the lives and legacies of two heroes of New Granada’s independence, whose struggle was marked by persistent caudillismo and dictatorships disguised as democracy. Knowledge of this part of history highlights the importance of defending and promoting democratic values, because both freedom and justice remain fundamental aspirations of society.
