Synopsis

There are issues on which no society can consider its reflection complete, because they belong to that category of questions that have accompanied humankind throughout history and that, with the passage of time, take on new meanings and demand new answers. Human rights undoubtedly fall into this category. To speak of them is to speak of human dignity and, likewise, of the way in which peoples, institutions, and generations have learned—not always without pain—to understand their responsibilities toward one another. Contexts, languages, and ways of relating to one another change, but one fundamental question remains: how to build societies in which life, liberty, justice, and the recognition of others are more than just noble aspirations and can become realities that are effectively protected.
