Synopsis

The energy crisis facing the world today has led to the need to invest in research and development of renewable energy sources and practices to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, therefore, sustainable buildings, which demonstrate the efficient use of resources and energy, are gaining momentum in the construction field, becoming a global trend.

The architecture of office buildings, where workstations are the most frequent, are considered as large glazed facade surfaces that can enhance energy savings through the use of natural light. However, in the search for better thermal conditions, sun protection such as blinds or sunscreens and treatments on the reflectivity of the glazed surface are used to reduce the amount of light. In this sense, the excess of light causes glare problems and generates discomfort that can cause problems in the health and well-being of the users.

The main objective of the research presented in this work is the development of a methodology for a comprehensive post-occupational evaluation of visual comfort in office spaces that in its application allows a better integration of natural light and greater energy savings, obtaining a positive evaluation by users and a quantitative evaluation through technical aspects of lighting. A methodology composed of three main elements is proposed: i) design and validation of visual comfort appreciation surveys for occupants, ii) photometric measurements with the design of a questionnaire to evaluate physical conditions, and iii) dynamic simulations to determine the lighting comfort of users and estimate the energy saving potential of natural light.
