Panel 4. The Professional Practice of Latin American Architecture and Its Commitment to Research in Academic and Professional Circles
Synopsis
The approach of Thematic Panel 4 is based on the premise of the future of Latin American architecture and its commitment to research in both academic and professional spheres. This idea raises various dilemmas regarding the fields of knowledge in architecture and the specific ways in which the profession produces knowledge, inviting reflection on the impact of research conducted in and by academia and its subsequent application and relationship with communities.
Thus, architects, in their role within the society in which they operate, can perform more effectively when solutions are derived from applied research processes; in this context, they can incorporate other forms of knowledge and define the nature of their relationship with academic research generated in various contexts.
Broadening the scope of architectural research allows us to recognize the tools inherent to this field of knowledge, as well as its expansion and application into other fields of knowledge. Investigating methods and means is fundamental to understanding the logic of this knowledge, which highlights the relationship between design and research. New ways of practicing and thinking about architecture involve incorporating a diversity of architectural research methodologies that, even today, are still under development.
This overview laid the groundwork for the discussion at Roundtable 4, which began with the following question: What role does research play in the work of architecture professionals across different Latin American contexts?
